Free Parent Seminar: How Learning Styles Can Improve Your Child's Reading

Free Parent Seminar given by Reading Expert, Ricki Linksman:

Ask each member of your family the following question and tell them that there is no right or wrong answer. They should select the letter of the answer that describes them the best:

Question: When you learn something new, which way do you need to learn it? a) You like to have the teacher show you something like notes on the board, overheads, books, charts, maps, or graphs.

b) You like the teacher to tell you about it without showing you anything to look at, and you like to be able to ask questions and discuss the topic.

c) You like to take notes, write or draw the information, or use your hands to touch objects related to what you are learning.

d) You like to get up out of your seat and move around to be involved in activities, role-playing, simulations, projects, and movement in order to learn.

After having each person select a choice, compare your choices. Is each member of the family the same, or are you different?

This question comes from the Linksman Learning Style Preference Assessment and Brain Hemispheric Preference Assessment. It is one of many ways we find out what a person's learning style is. As you can see from the questions, people learn best in different ways. The people who selected choice "a" may have a hard time in a learning environment such as the one described in choice "b." Similarly, if someone who preferred choice "d" was taught in the way described in choices a, b, or c, it may be slower and more of a struggle to learn.

Knowing one's learning style can show you the best way for you to learn and accelerate progress. Think of it as using the nondominant hand to write as opposed to using your dominant hand. Which is easier? It is the same with learning styles.

Any subject can become easy to learn if taught in one's best learning style. Whether one is learning reading, math, writing, spelling, social studies, science, music, art, sports, or a hobby, learning can be easier and faster through one's best style.
